Nigeria’s ambition to become a global force in e-sports took a significant step forward on Thursday as the National Sports Commission (NSC) and the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) began discussions on a strategic partnership aimed at transforming the country’s digital sports landscape.

The initiative signals a shift from traditional sports development toward a more technology-driven ecosystem, where competition extends beyond stadiums into the fast-growing world of online gaming.
Leading the NSC delegation, Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade described the meeting with NCC Chairman Hon. Idris Olorunbe as a defining moment for the future of sports in Nigeria. The visit focused on building a collaborative framework that would accelerate the digitalisation of sports and elevate Nigerian e-sports to compete on a global scale. Both agencies acknowledged the urgent need to align infrastructure, policy, and investment to unlock the sector’s full potential.
Olopade emphasized that embracing technology is no longer optional but essential for growth. He noted that closer collaboration with the NCC would help strengthen sports science and create new opportunities within e-sports through targeted sponsorships and improved connectivity. According to him, the involvement of the telecommunications sector is critical in delivering the kind of digital backbone required for modern sports development.
He also highlighted the importance of private sector participation, calling for stronger Corporate Social Responsibility commitments to sports. Olopade stressed that building a 21st-century sports ecosystem would require active collaboration between government agencies and corporate stakeholders, particularly in enhancing digital infrastructure and expanding sponsorship opportunities across emerging sports platforms.
Responding to the proposal, NCC Chairman Idris Olorunbe expressed strong support for the initiative, stating that e-sports holds the same potential as traditional sports in terms of competition, entertainment, and economic value. He pointed to the broader impact of the partnership, noting that it could drive youth employment, stimulate digital innovation, and enhance Nigeria’s global image as a hub for tech-driven sports.
Both organisations have now agreed to establish a joint technical working group tasked with developing a comprehensive roadmap for sports digitalisation. This will include structuring e-sports leagues, building gaming infrastructure, and creating a national framework to attract investment and sponsorship. The emerging NSC–NCC alliance is widely seen as a landmark move that could lay the foundation for a sustainable digital sports economy in Nigeria.
