PLATEAU: Governor Mutfwang's Political Adviser, Latep Dabang, Resigns Amid Speculations Over Speaker’s Future

The Special Adviser to the Plateau State Governor on Political Affairs, Latep Dabang, has officially tendered his resignation.

In a letter dated June 30, 2025, and addressed to Governor Caleb Mutfwang, Dabang expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve in the current administration.
He commended the governor for his leadership and for allowing him to contribute to the political direction of the state.
Dabang previously served as the Director-General of the Plateau State Presidential and Gubernatorial Campaign Council for the People's Democratic Party (PDP) during the 2023 general elections.
Meanwhile, strong indications have emerged suggesting that the Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly, Hon. Gabriel Dewan, may also be considering resignation.
Dewan, who represents the Pankshin North Constituency, is the only lawmaker from the Young Progressives Party (YPP) in the 24-member Assembly.
According to sources within the legislature who requested anonymity, discussions are underway to facilitate a “soft landing” for the Speaker, with resignation being a likely option.
Governor Caleb mutfwang is currently in a closed-door meeting with the Speaker of the plateau State House of Assembly,Gabriel Dewan, and other lawmakers amid ongoing political tensions in the state legislature.
The lawmakers arrived at the old government house in Thier Vehicles in a at about 11.40 :00 am and were swiftly ushered into the Governor residence by security personnel.
Although the details of the meeting remain undisclosed, it is widely believed to be linked to the recent political crisis in the plateau Assembly.
The Speaker Gabriel Dewan has been the speaker of the state assembly since 2024 in the twin light of the Court of appeal ruling which later sacked sixteen people's democratic party Lawmakers and replaced them with fifteen members from the all progressive Congress APC and one form.labour party
Political analysts suggest Governor Mutfwang meeting meeting with the lawmakers could be a move to consolidate assembly unity and prevent further internal dispute hereby giving room for a new speaker in the state assembly.
Already, three members of the House have reportedly shown interest in vying for the position, should it become vacant.
