Eight passengers were killed in an attack on an 18-seater commercial bus in Mangun Village, located in Mangu Local Government Area (LGA) of Plateau State.

According to security sources, the incident occurred at approximately 9:47 p.m. on June 20, 2025. The bus, carrying 28 passengers, was traveling from Zaria, Kaduna State, en route to Qua’an-Pan LGA in Plateau State

The passengers were said to be on their way to attend a wedding.

Eyewitnesses blamed the attack on mistaken identity when the bus was suddenly intercepted by a mob who thought they were invaders into their community after the bus strayed from its original route having lost direction.

One individual remains in critical condition, and six others sustained various degrees of injuries. The assailants also set the vehicle ablaze, leaving behind its charred remains as a stark symbol of the tragedy.

Local community leaders and security forces intervened, successfully rescuing 14 passengers who were unharmed. The injured were immediately taken to the General Hospital in Mangu, where they received emergency medical care.

Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang visited the scene on Saturday and condemned the attack, labeling it a criminal act that would not be tolerated.

“This is not something we are happy with. It is an act of criminality that we condemn in its entirety,” Governor Mutfwang said. “I have spoken with Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State and the Emir of Zazzau to inform them of this unfortunate development.”

The governor called for calm and urged residents, especially the youth, to exercise restraint and avoid taking the law into their own hands.

“If you encounter strangers in your community, report to the appropriate authorities rather than resorting to violence. Mistaken identity can lead to tragic consequences,” he added.

Governor Mutfwang also visited the survivors receiving treatment at the Mangu General Hospital and pledged that the Plateau State Government would cover their medical expenses.

He extended his condolences to the families of the deceased and promised to send an official delegation to visit both the bereaved families and the Kaduna State Government.

He commended the swift response of local youth leaders and security agencies, whose actions helped prevent further loss of life.

Commissioner of Police in Plateau State, Mr. Emmanuel Adesina, confirmed the fatalities and stated that 22 suspects had been arrested in connection with the attack. He assured the public that investigations were ongoing and more arrests were expected.

“We are combing the area to apprehend others who may have been involved,” Adesina said.

Governor Mutfwang reiterated the commitment of his administration to maintaining peace and fostering unity in Plateau State.

“Plateau will continue to be a home for all Nigerians, regardless of ethnicity or religion. We must promote tolerance, mutual respect, and peaceful coexistence,” he concluded.

The leadership of the JNI has sued for calm.
