Jos Prison Update: 9 Inmates killed, 252 Escape, One Gunman Killed

The Nigerian Correctional Service(NCoS) Say, a total of A total of 252 inmates escaped the Jos Custodial Center when armed gunmen attacked the facility on Sunday leaving 9 inmates dead.


One armed personnel of the Nigerian Correctional Service, an assistant superintendent of was also killed in the gun battle before the attackers broke into the yard.


Ten of the fleeing inmates have so far been recaptured.


In a statement released by thePublic relations officer of the Nigerian Correctional Service, OF Enobore, MNIPR, mni confirmed that One of the gunmen trapped within the Medium Security Custodial Center, Jos after invading the facility has been identified as one of those killed in the gun duel.


The attackers who stormed the Custodial Center at about 5:20pm on Sunday 28th November 2021 engaged the Nigerian Correctional Service(NCoS) armed squad personnel in a fierce gun battle before breaking into the yard.


Samuel Aguda, Controller, Jos Custodial Center, explained that the veracity of an earlier report that armed gunmen were trapped inside the facility could not be immediately confirmed by the Controller-in-Charge of the command


Some properties including the record office and the ICT office were either destroyed or was burnt down completely by the inmates


The quick intervention of officers and men of other security agencies brought the situation under control


This is the second time in as many months that the Jos custodial center had come under similar attacks.


Jos Medium Security Custodial Centre as at the time of attack, had 1,060 inmates comprising 560 pre-trial detainees and 500 convicts.
